In these days of male grooming and the application of face creams and gels, massages and nose trimming, it was only a matter of time before I plucked up the courage and booked myself in for an mot and service at Genco's.
Located in the up and coming street that is Devonshire road, I timidly walked down the street on a Saturday morning thinking about what they were going to do to me and wondering if they had enough strimmer wire left.
As I walked in it looked like a trendy enough sort of a place and I was ushered over to the leather chairs to have a seat and wait for my executioner. There was a longish wait which I filled with today's newspaper and a coffee - which was good news for the hangover.
So onto the business end - haircuts, styling, scalp massage, condition and colouring, get a standard shave or go for the full monty (exfoliate, deep cleanse and moisturise). In the "treatment room" they offer all sorts of massage, eyebrow reshaping and a whole lot of other things that men should be doing to themselves.
As for me - I had the scalp massage, condition and haircut - yes I bottled out, I think I will leave to those that are into that sort of thing and admit I am a coward.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Qype User (joshho…)London, United Kingdom0714 Jan 2013
My fiancee convinced me to get my hair cut at this place. Before that I was always the kind of guy, that cut his hair at the nearest barbershop for £10. I must admit I haven't thanked my fiancee enough for that visit.
She booked me a visit and I was surprised to find out that it was on a Sunday. I never knew that hair salons worked on weekends. The guy that cut my hair was really polite and not too chatty, so I had a very relaxing time there. I explained to him that I wanted to change my hairstyle and he was quite enthusiastic to offer me his help and make some suggestions. The final result was really nice. I was immensely satisfied with it, but most importantly my fiancee was too and she told me not to get my hair cut at any other place.
Excellent staff and atmosphere. It's definitely worth the money.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Abbie G.London, United Kingdom0326 Feb 2014
I bought a bday gift voucher for my husband a couple of weeks ago. He had a great haircut and he loved the massage. I went to pick him up afterwards and the staff are really friendly, I love the deco and its got a really nice ambience. I would definitely recommend it and my husband is going back there in a few weeks for another haircut!

First off let me start this review with stating that I have just been refused a haircut due to apparently block booking shifts with one of the senior stylists Paul Steel. I would like put out that I have been seeing Paul for the past 2.5 years regularly and can't sing his praises highly enough of his skills.
Ok now that is out of the way, I'll just explain what happened today that persuaded me to type up a negative review. When I arrived for my appointment which I booked using the mind connect app which I believe is a new booking system they implemented. All fine, now upon stepping through the door I was informed by Paul that he refuses to provide a service for me as I have apparently booked three shifts?! With no time to absorb this I was shouted at and explained that he had just come into work after time away to see that I had booked three times and therefore have denied him income that he could earn. I totally understand his point as it is his livelihood and I honestly like the guy and would not want to do anything that may affect him negatively financially. I was told that they had tried to contact me repeatedly via phone and email, although later they confirmed when they showed me the database that they did not have my number (although I have been texted previously for appointment reminders on the same number). As it was a new system they did not transfer over all the personal data over, but did have my correct email.
He could not confirm who tried to contact me and I showed him that I had not received any texts not emails, yet to no budge.
May I just add that previously the salon has overbooked before and therefore I was told that I would have to rebook even though I had taken a day off from work to visit I was happy to do this on the understanding mistakes happen.
The way I was confronted was disgusting. After I have been such a loyal customer to be treated like that I found humiliating to be belittled in front of other staff and clients. That was truly vile.
I am going to reiterate that Paul is a lovely guy and extremely talented and by no means do I wish for this review to deter future clients ( I have recommended friends previously to genco), I just want Paul to recognise the way that the situation was handled disgracefully. He should have challenged me away from the shop floor and not without being sure of all the facts. I truly think Paul may of just had a rubbish day which we are all susceptible to have.
It's a shame but I will be taking my custom elsewhere.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (cark0t…)London, United Kingdom075 Sept 2012

Thanks for your comments. We do have (what I thought) was a fail-proof system whereby we tag those clients who have requested a specific stylist. We clearly made a mistake and I can only apologise. I am surprised that you felt you had a bad haircut as the standard is high here (afterall you came by way of a word of mouth recommendation). However, we aren't perfect and although they happen rarely, mistakes do happen. I understand why you may not have wanted to make a scene in a busy salon, but we do have a no nonsense policy of refunding your money back regardless of whether we think we are at fault or not. For us it is more important to take account of how a customer feels. Had you complained at the time the team would have called me personally to help try and make amends. All the same I do appreciate that you may have felt that it was not appropriate to complain as the salon was busy. The team was not aware that you were unhappy, especially as you tipped the stylist. On seeing your review we discussed this incident at our team meeting and have made some changes to how reception make and move appointments to ensure that the same mistake doesn't happen again. We get it right almost all of the time, but when we do slip-up we review our procedures and systems and immediately make changes when appropriate. We take our business, what we do and our clients very seriously.

Week ago had an appointment with Niel for a hair cut. I went to Notting Hill, its their new branch, and very clean and well designed. It is my first time, and Niel spent an hour sorting out my hair. I'd say I never had such an amazing hair cut in my life. It was fantastic, and he is brilliant at his work, he knows exactly what he is doing. Niel was very friendly, and he understand what kind of cut exactly I am looking for. Usually when I go work, I had to spent 10min fighting with my hair but now I only need to spent a minute with my hair. It's an amazing experience, and I'd definitely go again.

I've been going there for about a year and have had my hair cut by a couple of the guys over this time. Always get a cut I like and always have a good experience.

I was expecting so much from my first hair cut, esp having read the many positive reviews and the salon's website, only to be somewhat disappointed! The stylist was 'ok' and there was no consultation as to what look was appropriate although I must add that the environment and ambiance of the place was superb. Overall a very relaxing environment and good customer service but not the perfect haircut for the price I paid!
