On our trip around the world, we came upon this place by referral of a friend. Nestled into paradise, this undiscovered (at least to us) winery is a true gem that creates some of the most complex and delicious wines we'd ever tasted. The price tag is a little heavy to have endless bottles sitting around MY house. But, if / when I start making a bit more dough, I'm going to buy stock in this place and become a premier wine member at Destiny Bay. The Magna Praemia was my favorite. Very rarely have I found a wine so big also be so balanced and smooth. As I savored each drop, we were treated to a personal tour by the winemaker himself. Did I mention this vineyard is nestled into the lush countryside of a gorgeous island that sits about 30 minutes by boat from Aukland (where you might catch a whale sighting on the trip over)? No better way to visit New Zealand. I can't wait to go back!

Destiny Bay is a bit of a trek from the ferry terminal, but the wines are well worth the trip. Everything about the vineyard is stunning - from the views to the winery tour to the wines themselves. On our last trip to Waiheke we were invited to the vineyard for a private tour and tasting during the fall harvest. We spent an amazing day picking grapes and tasting some of the best wines I have had anywhere in the world. Thanks, Destiny Bay for a great day out. We recently opened our last bottle of Magna Praemia so we'll have to plan another trip back out to see you. Soon.
