A quick stop for gas, turned into a pit stop experience, when we discovered Monteith's Brewery nearby.
Noted as the original home of craft beer NZ, the brewery offers a wide selection of beers, cider, and food within their massive set up with ample indoor/outdoor seating (though pay attention to the reserved tables).
We initially intended to share a beer flight, but after a few samples from the tap, settled on a pint each.
The beer was average. I would describe them as 'mass drinkable' versus specialty unique flavor.
Overall, a good one-time-we got to try it-experience, but wouldn't be a regular. We did enjoy the rustic feel and ambiance of the brewery.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 18 Mar 2020
If you're in Greymouth and like good food and good beer this is your place. Spacious open seating with different room choices, high ceilings, quaint seating for couples, long table seating for groups, and family style seating. Great service with enthusiasm and friendliness.
Get a pint, get a flight, try a wine, they have many selections.
One of the few breweries with a lot of hoodie and t-shirt choices.
Great atmosphere for everyone.

Monteith's is the first place I tried NZ's fabled green lip mussels in their place of origin. I wanted to try the whitebait patty too, but they were out (at 4pm - weird). We also became probably the first people ever to step inside Monteith's without ordering beer (we got ginger beer and an apple feijoa drink - feijoa is not widespread where we're from and we happily took advantage of its abundance in NZ).
The mussels were fantastic, of course - almost as meaty as a chop and full of oceany flavor and bite. I would have preferred them, however, completely unadorned rather than how they came, which was meant to be a green curry sauce but tasted essentially like a bowl of straight coconut milk.
Similarly, the venison sliders we got instead of the whitebait had excellent quality, well-cooked meat but super weak blue cheese accompaniment. And the fries - thick cut and delicious, but served with... mayo. Maybe it was supposed to be aioli? Regardless: mayo.
In sum: strong bones, questionable accompaniments.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 10 Oct 2017
Maybe our expectations were too high but this place was very disappointing. A local told us about this place and didn't stop raving about it. He said there are usually a ton of people beer tasting and having a grand ol' time. Maybe it was the fact that it was their off season and/or it was a Monday but this place was dead. There was one group of people eating but it turned out to be the workers on break!
We signed up for the tour: $25 per person that includes 3 beer tastings or $35 if we want a personalized beer. We decided to get one personalized beer as a gift for a friend. The tour was totally not worth it. The tour guide did a very good job and tried to be funny but there was just not much fun history to talk about. Since you can buy a beer tasting for $13 I really don't think the tour was worth the extra $12.
The tasting was also only for beers on tap and you only get a small tasting glass. Maybe you can get a little buzzed if you drink all 3 without any food but that's about it.
The worst part for us was the employee who made our personalized beer bottle did a horrible job. The label was slapped on cooked with a ton of ugly air bubbles and streaks. We showed her and she was not sorry at all and even fought us that all she could do was try to press out the air bubbles by hand. She then took it in the back and I guess got to work. Her superior must have seen her trying to fix her label because the other woman brought a new beer bottle to us with a new label put perfectly on the bottle. She even apologized and said the other woman should have never given us that bottle. We couldn't have agreed more.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Hal S.Rogers, United States15922 Nov 2018
Our Airbnb host recommended this place, and it was a great recommendation. We shared a huge plate of ribs, and the bartender even went out of his way to mix me up some iced tea. My wife had a glass of Chardonnay (there was only one on the menu), and it was good, as well.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Recommended.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tony L.Auckland2413859126 Jun 2016
This place has really undergone some major upgrades since I was here 7-8 years ago. The hours have also extended to 11am-8pm.
The place is rustic yet model. Ample seating including bar stools, tables, and couches. Nothing beats having a drink in front of the fireplace in the winter.
An acceptable selection of bar food with matching beer suggestions. Portions are a little on the small size for the price, but the quality is for sure a lot better than the nearby competitions.
Serves all of Monteith's beers. You will probably find the flavour a bit bland if you are into the new microbrew taste. but still, Monteith's is still the best beer you will get along the coast.
Luckily DB has left them to do their own thing.
There are also the option of kids menu and non-alcoholic beverages (coffee etc).
The price for the tour has gone up since I was last here, but still worthwhile to learn the history and the best part is the beer tasting at the end!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Michael H.Ramersdorf-Perlach, Munich, Germany7118282523 Nov 2014First to Review
Really good experience. Handcrafted beer
Very nice tour through the brewery and you can see that everything is done by one three men. Only for the quality control there are three more lady's to help them. Really unique site and I felt very welcome.
20$ a tour and you'll get a 45min tour and four 200ml beers to taste one of them you'll have to tap yourself. So good value for money.
Absolutely recommend if you like beerHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Amanda D.Liberty Grove, Australia91222 Jul 2018
Such a great place to go for a few drinks and food.
I had the apple cider which was so clear and delicious. And the Coast Fried Chicken, which was crunchy with the perfect mix of flavouring.
The relaxed atmosphere was also great. It is a great place to catch up with friends or a quiet romantic dinner for two.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dean C.Christchurch, Canterbury033 Jun 2018
